  • 2 Knickerbocker Yarn

    A fancy yarn with small spots of bright colour in the form of small knops. The spotting material is flecked on at the carder, and several colours can be used. It is a nub type of yarn spun on the woollen principle. It is used for fancy tweed cloths for sports wear. Cotton is sometimes used for effect.

  • 3 Core Yarn

    A fancy yarn made with a centre yarn of possibly cheap material around which is wound a more expensive material which completely covers the cheap yarn. Sometimes a core is introduced for additional strength. The " Urgoite " core yarn consists of a core of paper wrapped with wool,)ute, flax, etc. The " Leclercq Dupire " yarn has a cotton core and a worsted covering. Tinsel yams are also core yarns.

  • 4 Knop Yarn

    A fancy yarn with lumps or thick places appearing at intervals. The knops can be either the same colour as the ground thread or in other colours. It consists of one or more foundation yarns usually two-ply and a coarse hard-twisted yarn, the latter forms the knops. The foundation yarn is delivered slowly at intermittent speed while the delivery of the coarse yarn is quicker and continuous resulting in the intermittent accumulation of this thread which forms the knops. A third thread may be doubled with the former group with twist in the opposite direction and about half the turns. Knop yarn is used to ornament numerous fabrics and is most often used as weft.

  • 5 Nub Yarn

    Fancy yarn also called knop yarn. The nubs when woven stand out on the top of the cloth. It is used in homespuns and also ladies' dress fabrics.

  • 6 Reamy Yarn

    A fancy yarn made up of a two-fold and single yarn doubled together.

  • 7 Curl Yarn

    A type of fancy yarn twist, in which loops are formed of mohair or thick cotton or two ordinary threads. One of the ordinary or thin threads and the thick cotton or mohair are twisted together, the thin thread being tightly held and the thick one slackly twisted round it. This two-fold thread is then twisted in the reverse direction with another thin thread. The reverse twisting throws up the thick thread in the form of loops. The curls or loops vary in size from small to large. Small loops are usually on yarns intended for dress goods, large ones for astrakhans, etc.

  • 8 Leclercq-Dupire Yarn

    A fancy yarn consisting of a core of cotton around which is wound a worsted covering.

  • 9 Mixture Yarn

    A fancy yarn used in the wool trade. It is spun from fibres which have been dyed in various colours before spinning and these are mixed together to produce a desired tone. It may be woollen or worsted spun. Typical yarns are heather, lovats and tinted greys.

  • 10 Slub Yarn

    This is a fancy yarn in which thick places occur at regular or random intervals. Slub yarns can be single, two- or three-ply.

  • 11 Spiral Yarn

    A fancy yarn made up of two threads twisted tightly together, and round this a soft spun thread is spirally twisted. These several threads may be of different colours or counts. Two threads of different counts twisted together will also give a spiral effect, the greater the difference in thickness the more prominent is the spiral.

  • 13 Chain Yarn

    A three-fold yarn made from a thick soft spun thread twisted with another thread of finer counts and a medium twist. This double thread is again twisted with a third and still finer thread, but with the twist in the reverse way. The illustration shows a cloth in which a chain yarn is used for figuring, Both warp and weft are utilised and by weaving these fancy yarns on an open ground cloth a reversible fabric is obtained. The ground cloth is 36 X 40 per inch, 50's/50's cotton yarns and figuring cham yarn 12 X 12 per inch (see Yarns)

  • 14 Button Yarn

    A fancy effect yarn much used in America, in which a button or knot is formed by twisting one thread around another at regular intervals. A third or tie thread fixes the button effects. The thread forming the buttons is a hard twist two-fold yarn. A large variety of buttons are made, small, large, long and short.

  • 16 Kyrle Yarn

    A fancy woollen yarn used for overcoatings and dress goods.

  • 17 Paper Yarn

    Paper is wound in roll form and then cut into narrow flat strips from 1/4-in. upward. After damping, the edges of the strips are turned and then twisted into round thread form. Paper yarn is used for weft in fabrics such as canvas, mats, packsheets, for the backs of rugs and carpets, and is also made into fancy articles. If required in colours it is dyed in the pulp form. The paper stripes may be twisted around a core of fibre to give strength.

  • 18 Bayko Yarn

    A fancy yam with a metallic core, in several colours, used for weaving, knitting, etc. The thick yam is dyed in a chemical solution.
